Cataldo, (cat-al-do) home of the oldest standing building in Idaho, which has played a key role in the development of the northwest; the Old Mission.  Although the population is now small, it hasn't always been this way.  In 1990, there were 100 inhabitants in Cataldo. The small town of Cataldo lies approximately 20 miles east of Coeur d'Alene...just a quick hop over the 4th of July Pass (elevation just over 3,000 feet).

A popular tourist attraction in Cataldo is the famous Old Mission.  It has been standing for 150 years at its present site.  The entire mission was built without the use of a single nail and you can still see the small handprints in some of the walls of the little Indian children who helped in the construction.

The building is about 90 feet high and 40 feet wide.  A project of this size was not and easy task in the 1800's.  Antonio Ravalli designed and oversaw the construction of the Mission.
